Supercell invests $2.9 million in Shipyard Games
Shipyard Games is a fresh new game studio from Helsinki, specialising in location-based mobile games. Three of five founders are from Grey Area, the company that created the world’s first location-based online multiplayer game Shadow Cities.
“We are in the business of making location-based games because we just can't get enough of them. They are like a good sized bag of kettle cooked potato chips with aioli dip. Once you're on, you won't get off until you've consumed every last crumb of unparalleled joy,” says Andreas Wedenberg, co-founder and CEO of the company. Even though making location-based games is challenging, he’s confident about the future: “Location-based games are hard work, but the potential is huge. We know Pokemon just scratched the surface.” Because of the founders’ background, Shipyard Games has a clear advantage. “Since we were among the first and we’ve been taught a few lessons.”
Supercell made the $2.9 million investment early this year. Shipyard finds the partnership valuable: “We’re positively thrilled about having Supercell, because we’ve always admired their ability to create games that hook you for years. Supercell was always our first option and we could not have found a better investor for our company,” Andreas sums up.
